Surfboard rentals in Port Aransas

Two long-running surf shops cover most of the rental market in Port A — Texas Surf Camps and Pa-Hee-No Surf Co. — and both will deliver a board (and a wetsuit if you need one) to your Cinnamon Shore rental for a small fee. Here's what to rent for the kind of waves Port Aransas actually has, what to expect to pay by the day and the week, and how to fold a board into a beach week.

Texas Gulf surf is forgiving, mostly small, and almost always rideable on the right board. That makes the rental decision easy: a 9-foot soft-top is the right call for almost everyone, almost every day. The shops know this and stock soft-tops heavily. Where it gets interesting is everything around the board — wetsuits in winter, kids' boards in summer, a dedicated longboard if you've actually surfed before, and how delivery to Cinnamon Shore actually works.

Where to rent (and what they carry)

Two shops do most of the rental volume in Port A. Both also run lessons, both deliver, and both will rent for a single session up through a full week.

  • Texas Surf Camps — soft-tops in 7'6", 8', 9', and 10' lengths, longboards, fish, kids' shortboards, and wetsuit tops/full-suits. Group and private lessons; week-long summer surf camps for kids.
  • Pa-Hee-No Surf Co. — surf shop and rental in town. Soft-tops, longboards, kids' boards, wetsuits and rash guards, plus retail boards, leashes, fins, and wax if you decide to buy.
  • Several beach shops along TX-361 also stock cheap rental softies for walk-up rentals — fine for a single session, but the dedicated surf shops are the better experience for a full week.

What to rent for Port Aransas waves

Set expectations to knee- to waist-high on most days, with bigger windows after tropical or strong-front swell. The board choice follows from that.

  • 9' soft-top — the right board for ~80% of rental customers. Forgiving, paddles easily, won't hurt anyone in a Texas-busy lineup, catches small mush effortlessly. Default choice unless you have a reason to deviate.
  • Longboard (hard) — if you've surfed before and want better glide and turning. Worth the upgrade on knee-high days when you actually want to noseride.
  • Fish or mid-length — only worth it on bigger swell days (typically August–October tropical or November–February cold-front swell). Ask the shop about the forecast before paying for a higher-performance board.
  • Kids' soft-tops — 6' to 7' for ages roughly 8–14. Lessons first; kids who haven't surfed before learn fastest with an instructor and a properly sized soft-top.

What to expect to pay

Pricing across the local shops is broadly consistent. Day and week rates both exist; the week is meaningfully cheaper per day if you're staying 4+ nights.

  • Soft-top, day: roughly $25–$40.
  • Soft-top, week: roughly $100–$150.
  • Hard longboard or premium board, day: roughly $40–$60.
  • Hard longboard or premium board, week: roughly $175–$250.
  • Wetsuit top, day/week: roughly $10–$15 / $40–$60.
  • Full wetsuit (2 mm or 3/2), day/week: roughly $20–$30 / $80–$130.
  • Delivery to Cinnamon Shore: commonly $15–$30 round trip, sometimes free with a multi-board order.
  • Private lesson (board, leash, instruction included): roughly $60–$90 per hour.

When you'll want a wetsuit

From roughly May through October, water is 75°F+ and trunks or a swim suit are fine. From November through April, a 2 mm or 3/2 mm wetsuit (or at minimum a wetsuit top) makes a long session bearable. Mid-winter water can drop into the upper 50s after a cold front — that's a full-suit day. The shops know the current water temperature and will steer you right; don't be a hero in February.

How delivery to Cinnamon Shore works

Most rental shops will deliver to your Cinnamon Shore vacation rental for $15–$30 round trip, sometimes free if you're renting two or more boards or booking a lesson on top. The shop drops the board(s), leash, and any wetsuits at your front porch the morning of arrival (or whenever you specify) and picks them up after departure. You don't need a roof rack on your rental SUV.

If you're driving in and your car can already carry a board, walk-up rental at the shop is also fine — Pa-Hee-No is in town and easy to swing through.

Rental + lesson is the right first move

If anyone in the group hasn't surfed before, book a lesson first and add a week-long board rental to the same order. The board rental almost always gets discounted when bundled, and you'll know after one lesson whether you actually want the board for the week. Texas Surf Camps and Pa-Hee-No both run beginner lessons at Horace Caldwell Pier, which is the classic Port A learning wave.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I rent a surfboard in Port Aransas?

Texas Surf Camps and Pa-Hee-No Surf Co. both rent soft-tops, longboards, kids' boards, and wetsuits by the day or the week, and both will deliver to most Port A vacation rentals (including Cinnamon Shore) for a small fee. Several beach shops along TX-361 also stock cheap rental softies for walk-up day rentals.

How much does it cost to rent a surfboard in Port Aransas?

Soft-tops run about $25–$40 per day or $100–$150 per week. Hard longboards and premium boards are $40–$60 per day or $175–$250 per week. Wetsuit tops are $10–$15/day; full wetsuits are $20–$30/day. Delivery to Cinnamon Shore is typically $15–$30 round trip, often free on multi-board orders.

What kind of board should I rent for Port Aransas?

A 9-foot soft-top is the right answer for most renters most days. Texas Gulf surf is small and forgiving — a soft-top paddles easily, catches knee- to waist-high mush, and is safe for everyone in a busy lineup. Step up to a hard longboard if you've surfed before and want better glide; only rent a fish or shortboard on bigger tropical or cold-front swell days.

Do I need a wetsuit to surf in Port Aransas?

From May through October, no — water is 75°F+ and trunks are fine. From November through April, a 2 mm or 3/2 mm wetsuit (or at minimum a wetsuit top) makes a long session bearable. Mid-winter water can drop into the upper 50s after a cold front. Both rental shops carry wetsuits in season.

Will the surf shop deliver a board to Cinnamon Shore?

Yes. Both Texas Surf Camps and Pa-Hee-No Surf Co. deliver to Cinnamon Shore vacation rentals — typically $15–$30 round trip, often free with a multi-board order or when bundled with a lesson. Boards, leashes, and wetsuits are dropped at your front porch the morning of arrival and picked up after departure.

Can kids rent a surfboard in Port Aransas?

Yes. Both shops carry kids' soft-tops in 6' to 7' lengths for ages roughly 8–14, with kid-sized leashes. Strongly consider a beginner lesson before turning a kid loose with a rental — Texas Surf Camps even runs week-long summer surf camps designed exactly for this.

Is it better to rent for the day or the week?

The week if you're staying 4+ nights — almost every shop discounts the weekly rate to roughly 4× the day rate, so days 5, 6, and 7 are effectively free. If the forecast is small all week, having the board on the porch matters: you can paddle out for an hour anytime conditions look fun.
